Film Name: 消失的人 / Vanishing Point

Before the May Day holiday, if you’d asked which of the dozen or so new films releasing over the break would come out on top, few would have picked *Vanishing Point*—and I certainly didn’t have high hopes for it either… Not for any particular reason, but simply because domestic suspense, thriller, and crime films have historically been a hotbed of flops; it’s just common wisdom based on long-standing experience.

Yet as the May Day holiday draws to a close today, the film has emerged as the biggest winner—not only a box office dark horse, but also enjoying steadily improving word of mouth. While this achievement might feel a bit like “picking the best of a bad bunch” in a film market that’s been cooling off time and again, for the movie itself, it’s undoubtedly a success far beyond expectations.

After watching the film, I finally understood: if you really want to nitpick, “Vanishing Point” certainly has its flaws and can’t be called outstanding. Yet it firmly anchors itself in the foundation of “telling a logically coherent and compelling story.” It is precisely because it maintains such a high baseline that it was able to break through the mudslinging competition.

“Vanishing Point” tells the story of three mysterious cases that take place in the same neighborhood. The truths are simple and clear, and the plot is predictable and easy to follow. Judged solely by the standards of a suspense-crime film, it isn’t particularly sophisticated… but it excels thanks to its highly polished and masterful storytelling techniques.

The film breaks down and rearranges three cases that occurred at different times, first laying out the facts with Yan Wu, a compulsive gambler, hiding his father’s body a few days prior, then presenting the cases of Lin Yutong’s drugging and rape six months earlier and Tang Nuo’s mysterious disappearance on the same day as a riddle, Meanwhile, the corpse-hiding storyline focuses on horror and suspense, the drugging and rape storyline is half-suspense, half-thriller, and the disappearance storyline is pure suspense (all of which happen to be areas where director Cheng Weihao excels), creating a viewing experience that is both diverse and layered.

To enhance the watchability of this relatively straightforward story, “Vanishing Point” also incorporates numerous red herrings that seem plausible yet are actually misleading. For instance, Lin Yutong successively suspects her colleague Xiao Jun, who has shown interest in her, and her overprotective doctor brother Lin Wenzhao. Meanwhile, while searching for Tang Nuo, the police uncover information from his mother, Ah Yu, revealing that she had concealed his ADHD and suspected domestic violence.

The three storylines are like three drops of water falling into a spiral funnel; after continuously sinking independently and passing each other by, they ultimately converge at the bottom to form a single truth.

What’s even more remarkable is that, despite its already substantial narrative, “Vanishing Point” incorporates numerous details that spark the audience’s imagination and invite reflection long after the film ends—such as the button fastened at Lin Yutong’s collar, Xu Yingying’s deliberate mention of losing her keys, and Xu Zhijie’s impersonal home decor. In particular, Xu Yingying’s attempt to ” ‘trading her father for a new home’—had this been explored more deeply, it could have added a whole new dimension to the film.

Even so, “Vanishing Point” is thoroughly engaging. Despite its objective flaws—such as the underdeveloped characterization of Ah Yu and others, and the superficial treatment of social issues—these do not detract from the narrative’s brilliance.

A film’s ceiling determines how high and how far it can go, while its floor determines whether it can walk steadily and stand firm—for the vast majority of films released in theaters to make money, the story’s watchability is that floor. In a climate where many creators are pursuing individual expression and specialized development, the modest success of “Vanishing Point” might serve as a valuable demonstration and source of inspiration.
